Why Ablation Experience Matters for Your Outcome
‘How many of these have you done?’ is a question some patients feel embarrassed to ask a doctor. I want to put that worry to rest. It is one of the most useful questions you can ask before any procedure, AF ablation included, and any specialist confident in their own practice should be glad to answer it plainly.
Why volume matters in a procedure like this
AF ablation involves guiding fine catheters through blood vessels into the heart, building a detailed electrical map, and delivering carefully placed lesions around the pulmonary veins, the vessels most commonly responsible for triggering AF. Every heart is shaped slightly differently, and every case throws up small variations that only become familiar through repetition. This is not unique to cardiology. Across many areas of medicine, specialists and centres who perform a procedure more often tend to see fewer complications and more consistent results, simply because pattern recognition builds with volume.
What this looks like in practice
Over more than 2,500 AF ablation procedures, I have learned that the difference between a straightforward case and a difficult one is often not visible until you are partway through it. Recognising that difference quickly, and adjusting the approach in the moment, is something that becomes more reliable the more cases you have seen. It is one of the reasons I would encourage any patient to ask directly about a specialist’s procedure count, rather than relying on years in practice as a proxy for it.
Questions that get past the marketing
- How many AF ablations have you personally performed, as the lead operator
- How many have you performed in the last twelve months specifically
- What is your complication rate, and how does it compare with published national figures
- What proportion of your patients need a second procedure

Volume is not the only thing that matters
None of this means the most experienced operator is automatically right for every patient. Communication, availability, and how well a specialist understands your specific circumstances all matter too. But procedure volume is one of the few genuinely objective measures available to you, and it deserves more attention than it usually gets in that first conversation.
