Ten Questions to Ask Before Your AF Ablation Consultation

September 28, 2026Dr Boon LimUncategorized

Most patients arrive at their first AF consultation with one question in mind, usually some version of ‘is this serious’. That is an important question, but it is rarely the only one worth asking. Over the years I have noticed that the patients who leave a consultation feeling genuinely informed are usually the ones who came prepared with a short list of questions, rather than relying on the conversation to cover everything by itself.

Here are the ten I would recommend, drawn from the questions my own patients have found most useful.

The ten questions

  • What type of AF do I have, and does that affect my treatment options
  • What is my personal stroke risk, and do I need blood thinning medication
  • Is ablation an appropriate option for me specifically, or would medication be a reasonable first step
  • What technology would be used for my ablation, and why
  • How many of these procedures have you personally performed
  • Would this be a day case procedure, or would I need to stay overnight
  • What are the realistic chances this will control my symptoms long term
  • What are the risks, specifically, not just in general terms
  • What would recovery actually involve, day by day
  • What happens if the first procedure doesn’t fully resolve things

Why these ten, specifically

Questions one to three establish whether ablation is even the right conversation to be having, since not every patient with AF needs or benefits from it. Questions four to seven get at the practical detail that marketing language tends to skate over. Questions eight to ten are the ones patients most often say they wish they had asked sooner, because they affect what the weeks after the procedure actually look like.

A patient’s experience
A retired nurse told me she brought a written list of questions to her consultation because she didn’t trust herself to remember everything once she was sitting in front of a doctor. She said it was the best decision she made in the whole process, because it meant the appointment covered what she actually needed, not just what came up naturally in conversation.

A note on bringing this list with you

There is nothing awkward about bringing a written list of questions into a consultation. Any specialist worth seeing will welcome it, because it means the time is used well for both of you. If a question doesn’t get a clear answer, it is entirely reasonable to ask it again in different words, or to ask for it in writing afterwards.
