How to Choose the Best AF Ablation Specialist in London
A patient said something to me recently that has stuck with me. She had spent two weeks searching online for ‘the best AF specialist in London’ before her first appointment, and told me she still had no idea what she was actually meant to be looking for. Every website used the same words. Every doctor was apparently award-winning. She had no way to tell them apart.
She is right to be frustrated. ‘Best’ is used so loosely in medicine that it has almost stopped meaning anything. So I want to set out, as plainly as I can, what genuinely separates one AF ablation specialist from another, so you can judge for yourself rather than take anyone’s word for it, including mine.
Start with the title, not the marketing
Not every heart doctor who treats AF is the same kind of specialist. A general cardiologist manages the heart broadly, including AF with medication. An electrophysiologist is a cardiologist who has done several further years of subspecialty training specifically in the heart’s electrical system, and it is electrophysiologists who perform catheter ablation. If AF ablation is what you are considering, the person you see should be a consultant electrophysiologist, not simply ‘a cardiologist with an interest in AF’. Ask directly. It is a perfectly reasonable question, and any good specialist will answer it plainly.
Ask about procedure volume
How many AF ablations has this person actually performed? Not how many years they have been in practice, but the number of procedures. Complex procedures like AF ablation show a fairly consistent pattern across medicine: specialists and centres that perform higher volumes tend to see fewer complications and better long term outcomes, simply because of the accumulated pattern recognition that comes from doing something many hundreds of times over. It is entirely reasonable to ask your specialist directly how many ablations they have personally performed.
Ask what technology is being offered
AF ablation has changed a great deal even in the last three years. Three main energy sources are used to create the scar tissue that isolates the pulmonary veins, the blood vessels most commonly responsible for triggering AF: radiofrequency (heat), cryoablation (extreme cold), and the newer pulsed field ablation, which uses short electrical pulses that target heart muscle cells more selectively while largely sparing nearby structures. None of these is automatically ‘the best’ for every patient, but a specialist who can explain the differences and has access to more than one option is generally better placed to tailor treatment to you specifically, rather than offering you whatever their centre happens to have.
Look at where the procedure is done and how recovery is handled
Ask whether this will involve an overnight hospital stay or a day case procedure with discharge home the same day. Ask what the follow up pathway looks like if something feels wrong in the days afterwards. A specialist who can answer these questions in detail, without hesitation, is telling you something important about how well organised their service actually is.
Read what they have actually published, not just what they say about themselves
Any specialist worth seeing should be able to point you to their published research or outcomes data, ideally in a peer reviewed journal rather than only on their own website. This is not about chasing the most famous name. It is about checking that claims of expertise are backed by something you can independently verify.

A quick checklist
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Are you a consultant electrophysiologist? | This is the specific subspecialty trained to perform ablation |
| How many AF ablations have you personally performed? | Volume is linked to outcomes and complication rates |
| What ablation technologies do you offer? | Access to more than one option allows tailored treatment |
| Is this a day case procedure? | Tells you about recovery time and how the service is set up |
| Can I see your published outcomes? | Verifies claims independently, rather than taking them on trust |
Choosing who treats your heart rhythm is not something to rush, and it is not something anyone should feel awkward asking hard questions about. A good specialist will welcome the questions above. If they don’t, that tells you something too.
